I am
researching the Philippine
American War, 1899-1902 (or longer
depending
on which history you read!).One of
the mysteries left from the War is
the
activities of Anastacio Bartolome.
He was a freedom fighter in the
Lacuna
Brigade. Later he is said to have
killed the famous guerrilla David
Fagen
(a black American soldier who
defected to the Filipino
liberation struggle
and also fought under
Lacuna).Bartolome was from Santor,
near Bongabon,
from reports I have seen. He
reported the death of Fagen at the
American
garrison at Bongabon, early
December, 1901.He claimed he had
killed Fagen
and injured two Aetas who were
with him, and the wife may have
drowned.
The alleged incident was on the
beach at Dingalan Cove.
No one seems to know if
Bartolome did kill Fagen.
Apparently the Americans put a
US$600. reward
for Fagen, dead or alive. But
there is no record of it being
paid to Bartolome.Some
people think Fagen and Bartolome
made up the story to get the money
for
Bartolome, and a new life for
Fagen in the hills where he could
live peacefully
with his Filipina wife.

information about Bartolome, or
Fagen, or the
wife, or the Aetas who seem to
have escaped the alleged ambush.
