DOMINGO
DE RAMOS
The Palm Sunday rite commemorating
the
triumphant entry of Jesus
Christ into Jerusalem
starts at a barangay chapel
at the crack of dawn.
No one is spared the agony
of getting out of bed
so early on a Sunday...
not even little angels.
The parish priest, playing
the role of Jesus,
is accompanied by the faithful
carrying intricately woven
palm fronds in a procession
towards the main parish church.
The procession pauses in
front of four houses
along the way...
where a choir of young women
and girls
dressed in white stand by
the window...
sing an old Latin song of
praise...
and shower flower petals...
on the priest and the sea
of palm fronds below.
Then the procession slowly
makes its way
to the main church...
in a celebration of Filipino
creativity and faith.
